Web Conferencing: Science? Art? Both? Neither?

How much preparation do you put into your online sessions? For webinars or virtual classes where you are presenting a specific topic or subject to a large audience, you probably do a prep session or 2 to get your ideas down, your timing worked out, and your slides finalized.

But what about other less formal, ad-hoc online sessions?

For any type of online session, establishing best practices for development and delivery of your content is important if you want to keep your session on track with your agenda, deliver valuable information, and meet the expectations of your audience. Additionally, bringing some interactivity and “edu-tainment” to your delivery helps your audience to stay engaged and interested in your subject matter.

In a recent article, The Future is Virtual, this subject is discussed by the author, Alison Hall, and those she interviewed. It’s clear that they all feel that best practices apply to any virtual session and that the strategies we use for webinars or virtual classes apply also to meetings.

iLinc’s interactivity and collaboration tools are great at building interactive, interesting material for online sessions. When these tools are used in conjunction with other presentation best practices, your audience will leave with a feeling that they really learned something or the online session was very productive. Some of the specific tools I like to use are the immediate Feedback or structured Polling functionality of iLinc. I use these routinely in my own internal meetings with fellow employees as well as meetings with customers to gauge their level of interest or understanding quickly.

For your next session, become both a Scientist and Artist of your online session. Take the time to research and play with the different tools you have at your finger tips. You may find that you can easily insert a Feedback set into your session instead of asking for answers over the phone or in chat. Any interaction with you and the session content will lead to increased retention of the content and provide many ways you could discuss answer segments with your audience.
