It was announced today at Google I/O 2010, WebM video format that is based on the VP8 codec technology, will be offered by Google as an open source technology. With the release, Google is taking an open standards approach so that future consumers will be confident that any .webm file will play in any supported player. In addition to the benefit of finally having an open source video option for the web, many believe the VP8 platform delivers higher quality video while using less bandwidth.
